If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun then Puerto Morelos might be your answer. Located just 15 minutes south of Cancun, this charming little fishing town sits in the heart of the beautiful Riviera Maya, centrally located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

We stayed just north at the Excellence Riviera Cancun – A Celiac’s Review. I highly recommend this resort. We took the two mile walk up the beach to explore for the day. It was so hot we had to take a cab back. resort

Puerto Morelos has a very low key vibe. I loved the colorful painted buildings everywhere. The beach is beautiful. There was a lot of seaweed at the time of our trip in early August. Go down to the pier and check out the iconic leaning lighthouse. During hurricane Beulah in 1967, it was left leaning. They had tried to remove it but were unable to. They have since rebuilt another working lighthouse behind it, but left the old one up as a symbol of its strength.

Set back from the beach are some local markets for shopping. The locals are very friendly and willing to help you find whatever you are looking for. It’s a no hassle place to find some great souvenirs.

There are also some great restaurants scattered about. I stumbled upon a vegan taco restaurant that made the most amazing fruit smoothies.

If you’re up for some snorkeling the Mesoamerican Reef sits just 400 meters off shore. There are numerous excursions that offer snorkeling tours to the National Reef Park of Puerto Morelos. Mesoamerican Reef

It is definitely a charming little town. If you are looking for that laid back vibe there were some cute hotels along the beach. Personally, I prefer the nightlife and endless activities of Cancun, but it is definitely worth a day trip if you are staying close by.
