First, be aware of cross contamination sources such as blenders and anything on tap. For example, ask the bartender to make sure to clean the blenders and shakers first before making your drink. I usually avoid those frozen daiquiris in the machines not knowing exactly what mixes are in them. I always let my bartender know that I am celiac and must avoid gluten. Sometimes I get lucky and they know what I can and cannot have, even personalizing recipes for me.

Gluten Free Alcohol

Personally, I have never been a beer drinker so I will not be recommending any gluten-free beers, although I know they exist. However, I have found a love for cider and there are several that I like. Similarly, I do not drink red wine so I can’t recommend those. I like the bubbles, champagne, sparkling moscato, riesling. Likewise, I love a good cocktail, so I am forever on the hunt for gluten-free alcohol and mixers. Here is a list of what I have found and enjoy so far.

  • Tito’s Vodka: Tito’s is a go to. Gluten free and locally made here in my hometown. Perfect for those vodka martinis. Use it to make a Tito Mojito! Deep Eddy is also a great option. Another Austin favorite and their flavors are great. If you’re in the area visit their tasting room. Check out my Gluten Free Eats and Drinks In Austin Texas for more great ideas. Vodkas made from potatoes or corn are safer options. Drinks: Screwdriver, cosmo, martini
  • Ciders: Most traditional ciders, including hard apple cider and pear cider, are naturally gluten-free. Just be sure to check the label for any added ingredients that might contain gluten. I love Austin EastCiders, Meridian Hive, Angry Orchard, and Truly. Guinness makes a wonderful cider called Rockshore. Bulmers Cider, I had this in Ireland as well, is really good.

  • Wine: Wine, both red and white, are naturally gluten-free. However, some winemakers may use gluten-containing products in the winemaking process (barrels), if you’re concerned, you can research or contact the winery directly. As I said, I don’t drink reds so I can’t comment or recommend. One of my favorite wines is Bartenura Moscato D’asti. You can get it at Costco, and pretty much any wine shop for around the $10 price point.
  • Rum: All Malibu rum, including flavors are gluten-free according to their website. Oh what fun you can have with rum. Drinks: One of my favorites is a dark and stormy (recipe below), rum and coke, strawberry daiquiri, pina colada, coquito for the holidays.
  • Disaronno: According to their website it is gluten-free. I love an amaretto sour. Probably my favorite cocktail. Master of Mixes makes a gluten-free sweet and sour mixer. All of their mixers are great. Drinks: Amaretto sour, Disaronno and OJ

  • Champagne: We all know it is not actually champagne unless it comes from the Champagne region of France. Veuve Clicquot is my favorite. Definitely higher in price point, but well worth it. We visited their Champagne House in France and it was a dream. My second favorite is Piper Heidsieck. Drinks: Mimosas of all flavors. Cranberry or pomegranate juice is fun for the holiday! • Gluten-Free Liqueurs: There are gluten-free liqueurs available as well. Peach and Orange schnapps are my favorite as well as Limoncello and Midori. Always check ingredients or with the manufacturer. Drinks: Peach schnapps, Bellini, Midori sour
  • Sake: Since sake is made from rice it is usually gluten free. Check ingredients for any additives or flavorings.
  • Tequila: Tequila made with 100 percent agave is gluten free. Brands like Jose Cuervo, Don Julio and Patron are gluten free. Drinks: Tequila sunrise, margarita, Paloma
