EATING GLUTEN FREE IN AMSTERDAM

Traveling with celiac disease is always a challenge and Amsterdam really put me to the test. This was my first trip to Amsterdam so I did a lot of research. I scoured other travel blogs, making lists of restaurants and markets, using the FMGF App as a back up. I honestly thought there would be more options. It was not as easy as Paris or Dublin, that’s for sure. Nevertheless, I managed to not get sick on my trip, well at least not from the food. Here is a list of the restaurants and cafes I ate at and would recommend based on my experience.

Pancakes Amsterdam

We ate here several times. They have a gluten free, lactose free, vegan batter so you can enjoy a wonderful dutch pancake while in Amsterdam. These are really more like a crepe, very thin. The gluten free will come with a Dutch flag so make sure to check! There are many gluten free and vegan toppings to choose from. Enjoy sweet or savory. The #20 Veggie with pesto was my favorite.

Craft Coffee and Pastry

This is a dedicated gluten free pastry shop that I heard was wonderful. Unfortunately, due to time constraints I was never able to get there during business hours. They are only open from 10am to 4 pm.

Croque Madame

Croque Madame is a dedicated gluten free sandwich shop located in the Red Light District. It is very small and can get crowded. We tried to go for dinner one night and he had already sold out of food for the day. Super friendly and the pies were wonderful. They also have gluten free stroopwaffles at the checkout!

Wild and the Moon

A favorite from Paris. Vegan and gluten free, they have 3 locations in Amsterdam.

Cafe Piazza

Not dedicated gluten free, but going by the reviews on the Find Me Gluten Free App, they knew how to handle gluten free and cross contamination. Unfortunately, you need a reservation, so I didn’t get to find out. She literally laughed at me.

Bloem Eten and Drinken

Dedicated gluten free and Vegan, but farther out from city center.

Bagels and Beans

They have a gluten free bagel and the waitress asked if I had an allergy when I ordered, but definitely let them know to avoid cross contamination. There are several toppings you can get that are gluten free as well. I got tomato and avocado and it was wonderful. There are several locations in the city.

Gluten Free Bagels and Beans

Fabel Friet

What I wouldn’t do for French fries!!! Dedicated fryer for the fries. The menu is labeled with what sauces are gluten free. I had the vegan mayo and I was in heaven!

Gluten Free Fries

Vegan Temple Bar

Not dedicated gluten free, but they had a beyond burger with a gluten free bun. They also had nachos. The fries were not in a dedicated fryer so a side salad was offered with my burger. Though he was very hesitant about serving me, I feel like they took precautions to keep my food safe and I was not sick after eating there three times. I understood he couldn’t guarantee anything since the kitchen was not entirely gluten free.

Bollywood

Across from Vegan Temple Bar. Most of the menu was gluten free as curry usually is. I didn’t really know what I was ordering, I just asked for something with vegetables that was not spicy. It had some cheese cubes that I spooned out. Very good food, service was a little slow.

Soup Enzo

Small soup and salad shop. Not really any place to sit other that a couple of stools. The server told me all the soups were gluten free (that day), as well as all but one of the salads. I had a coconut sweet potato soup and it was perfect for a cold rainy day!

Gluten Free Soup Cafe Enzo

Mannekin Pis

More yummy fries. I waited in line for over half an hour to get these fries. Do not get the large. This is a medium and it is HUGE! Many of the sauces are gluten free, but not all. There is an allergen list on their website https://mannekenpis.nl/en and they can show you on site as well. I got the vegan mayo and new vegan cheese.

Gluten Free Fries

Lavinia

We stumbled upon this little place. They offered a gluten free vegan pancake. Not a dedicated facility, but the pancakes were very good. They had some gluten free baked goods but I was not brave enough to try.

Albert Heijn

Albert Heijn is the main grocery market in Amsterdam. They are everywhere and they have a selection of gluten free items such as Schar.
