Best Money Saving Travel Tips

You know the famous quote. “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” Contrary to popular belief, travel is not as out of reach as some may think. I personally would rather spend my money on travel adventures than anything else. Maybe it takes a little budgeting and saving, but it is well worth it. There are plenty of budget-friendly tricks to make your European trip a reality. With some careful planning you can enjoy the beauty of Europe without breaking the bank.

Plan Ahead and Research Your Destination

When it comes to traveling, planning ahead and researching your destination is essential for a smooth and enjoyable trip. Make sure to secure any travel documents such as visas or permits well ahead of time. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months left before expiration.

When planning a budget-friendly European trip, it’s essential to start with the basics: flights and accommodations. I usually start at least 3 months out, if not more, just to get a sense of what prices will be like. Sign up for email alerts from various airlines and travel websites to stay informed about any deals or promotions. We almost always fly United Airlines, just a preference.

I always book everything myself through discounted sites like Expedia.com or Booking.com. Remember, the cheapest flights often require some flexibility in your travel dates, so be open to adjusting your itinerary if it means saving a few hundred dollars. I am always playing with the dates and times. Sometimes I can get an extra day of vacation for the same price just by making a few tweaks here and there. I have noticed that Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually cheaper to fly.

Opt for Affordable Accommodation Options

As for accommodations, there are plenty of affordable options available in Europe. Consider staying in budget hotels. I always book basic rooms as I don’t plan on doing anything other than sleeping in them. If you’re open to sharing a room, hostels can be an option to keep costs low. Accommodations outside the city center are usually cheaper and with top notch public transportation you can be anywhere in no time. I personally prefer hotels over other options, but choose a more affordable room without fancy upgrades.

If I’m in Cancun I don’t need an ocean view because I will be out in the ocean. In places we travel often, Maui for example, we always stay at the Westin. Become a rewards member and often times they will upgrade you for free.

Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates

Traveling during off peak season or shoulder seasons is often less expensive, with the exception of the holidays of course. ie: Christmas in New York! You can usually find better deals on flights and accommodations. If you are willing, remaining open to last-minute deals and spontaneous adventures, you can SOMETIMES save money. Personally, it is not worth the anxiety for me. I am a hard core planner.

Use Public Transportation or Walk Instead

The wonderful thing about Europe is that most of the places are walkable. If not, the public transportation is top notch! There is no better way to explore a new city than by walking and getting to know your surroundings. I love exploring a new city on foot and admiring the architecture. Bonus, I come home a little lighter.

If walking isn’t your preferred mode of transportation, consider renting a bike to explore the city. Many European cities are known for being bike-friendly, like Amsterdam, with dedicated lanes. Renting a bike for the day or even just a few hours allows you to cover more ground and see the sights at a leisurely pace. Plus, it’s a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air.

While exploring a new city, using public transportation is not only convenient but also budget-friendly. European cities are known for their extensive and efficient public transportation systems, offering a range of options, including buses, trams, and metros. Research the different types of tickets and passes available. Often, purchasing a day pass or a multi-day travel card can save you money compared to buying individual tickets for each journey. These cards are often available for tourists and provide access to all modes of public transportation such as the Navigo in Paris. Not only will this save you money, but it will also save you the hassle of buying individual tickets for every trip.

Another fun option is the Big Bus Tours! This is a great way to get to know the city. I will admit I always thought these were a little cheesy until we tried it for the first time in London. It was a blast! If it’s nice out sit up top. Bonus, you will learn lots of facts about your new city!

Traveling From City To City

When traveling from city to city we like to use Omio. They are wonderful for buying tickets to European destinations. You can download the app and just scan your tickets at the station. Literally the easiest travel I have ever done.

Food and Drinks

No Michelin Star restaurants here. I normally try and book a room with a small kitchen due to food allergies, so I always have the option of cooking. This saves a lot of money on dining as well. Bring your own water bottle so you can refill it during the day. Remember all the walking you will be doing.

If cooking is not you thing, opt for local markets and budget-friendly restaurants. I love strolling through the markets, especially in France. These markets sell fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and bread. And of course, all the beautiful flowers. Plus, you’ll have the chance to interact with local vendors and practice the language skills that you learned Essential French Words and Phrases For Travel.

Attractions

I will not tell you to skip the touristy spots like the Eiffel Tower or the Acropolis because I absolutely feel like everyone should see everything. That being said you can definitely save some money on attractions with discounted passes and free museum days. There are museum passes for nearly every major city in Europe. These allow you to visit multiple museums and attractions for a reduced price. Some even include public transportation. They can save you a significant amount of money compared to buying individual tickets for each attraction. Plus, they often come with additional perks such as skip-the-line access, which can save you valuable time as well. Have you seen the lines at the Louvre? Go City passes can save you money on attractions in 30 different cities across the globe.

Pack Light to Avoid Extra Baggage Fees

You know my rule on this. Never check a bag. No waiting in lines, no baggage fees, no lost luggage. Pack efficiently in a carry on. Best Tips For Packing Efficiently In A Carry On

When it comes to souvenirs my philosophy has changed over the years. I no longer try and bring something back for EVERYONE. What I do bring back has to be authentic, not a cheap trinket. I love shopping at thrift stores and flea markets, especially for vintage clothing. They are treasure troves of one-of-a-kind finds. You never know what you’ll stumble upon. Again, shopping at thrift stores and flea markets is a chance to interact with locals and practice your language skills that you learned in Essential French Words and Phrases For Travel!
