Excellence Riviera Cancun Luxury Resort – A Celiac’s Review
Mexico is one of our all time favorite destinations. We go nearly every year for our anniversary. This year it took a little more planning to make sure I found an all inclusive resort that was able to accommodate my celiac disease. Nothing worse than being sick your entire vacation. After some research we decided on the Excellence Riviera Cancun.

Excellence Riviera Cancun is about two miles from Puerto Morelos on the Riviera Maya you will find this 5 star, all inclusive, adults only, luxury hotel. Let me tell you I had champagne in my hand not 30 seconds after stepping out of our airport transportation. The unbelievable service never stopped. We booked our entire package through Expedia and everything went flawlessly.
Check In
Check in was a breeze. One of the Food Service Managers, Alfredo, met with me at check in to discuss my food allergies and made notes in his notebook. He assured me I would be taken care of and I was. Anything I wanted could be made gluten free.
We were visiting for our 26 year wedding anniversary. When we arrived there was a banner on our door that said “It’s Our Anniversary” That was a sweet surprise. We had a bottle of champagne and a fruit basket waiting, and of course the towel swans!
Room Accommodations
We stayed in a junior swim up suite. It was incredible! The view was to die for. I loved being able to walk out of my room straight into the lazy river. The rooms were spacious with a jacuzzi inside and out! Rainfall shower, fully stocked mini bar, slippers and robes. There was a nightly turndown service as well, which was always nice to come home to each night.
For our anniversary we also received a special dinner at the restaurant of our choosing and champagne breakfast in bed. Unfortunately, due to my last minute booking we were not able to get a king room the first night, but she offered to move us the next day. We decided against it as we had already unpacked and did not want to hassle with moving.
Activities
There are an endless amount of activities to do here. There are 6 pools and 5 hot tubs, including the Excellence Club. Most people seem to congregate near Blue, the swim up bar. You can snorkel, sail, paddle board, kayak, play tennis, pool, darts, archery, the list goes on. There is a fitness center, yoga, and water aerobics. Sorry, I never checked those out. The Miile Spa is absolutely gorgeous. There is a hidden jacuzzi area inside the dome with water cascading from the ceiling.
The Beach
The beach is beautiful. Powdery soft sand. Peaceful and quiet. There are plenty of cabanas with loungers and daybeds. The beach service was outstanding. My beach bartender was gluten aware and knew what alcohol I could have and what to avoid. There is also plenty of beach entertainment like Mayan ceremonies, cooking and cocktail classes, and beach volleyball.
Dining
There are 10 restaurants at Excellence. As a vegetarian/celiac/picky eater, I will admit I did not go to all of them. My husband is not a vegetarian or celiac and he said it was by far the best resort food he has ever had. They ask about food allergies when you check in at every restaurant and the staff are very knowledgable. For our anniversary we chose Chez Isabelle, the French restaurant. I ordered ratatouille. It was to die for. They brought out gluten free bread and my own butter to avoid cross contamination. Basmati, the Indian restaurant was beautiful as well. I ordered lentil stew and rice. It was good, but a little spicy for me.
As Alfredo told me at check in, anything I wanted could be made gluten free. I had pancakes, french toast, omelettes, and bagels for breakfast. He made me gluten free pizza for lunch. It really is a celiac’s dream. I never worried. One night at Agave, the tortilla chips were not gluten free so they fried me up some corn tortillas to make chips for my guacamole. Agave was by far our favorite. I had jicama salad, cactus fajitas, chips and guacamole. I left stuffed every night! Remember they do have dress codes for all of the restaurants. I actually liked this rule as it kept it classy, even at breakfast and lunch.
Nightlife
The nightly entertainment was fun. There was a rock band, a circus show, acrobats show, and latin night. By far my favorite was the silent disco. Everyone gets headphones and heads to the dance floor. There are multiple DJ’S playing different music and you can change the station on your headphones. When you remove them it’s near silent outside, even though a ton of people are out on the dance floor going crazy!
The staff at Excellence Riviera Cancun went above and beyond to make our stay pleasurable. They were friendly and accommodating and definitely a big reason why we will be going back. 5 stars all the way!
To sum things up, I would definitely recommend Excellence Riviera Cancun to anyone looking for a luxury, all inclusive, and adults only vacation. I would especially recommend to anyone with food allergies. Seven days of eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner without getting sick? That’s what I call a win! Can’t wait to go back!
